When designing the
sanitary aspects of a home the most important thing to take into
consideration is the plumbing fixtures.
The pipes used to bring water and gas into
the home and to remove water waste including sewage are called the
plumbing set up.
Some of the most common plumbing fixtures include sinks, bathtubs,
toilets, urinals, and showers. The term plumbing fixtures also refers to
plumbing brassware such as regulators, valves, traps, and associated
ventilation apparatus. Hard water treatment and fuel oil products are
also considered plumbing fixtures. Often you can expect a guarantee of
at least ten years on many of these parts.
Types of Plumbing Fixtures
Flush Toilets
These facilitate the disposal of waste down the drain by using water.
The drain is designed with a curve to act as a trap. This trap prevents
the odor of sewage and gases from entering back into the home.
Urinals
These are designed specifically to be used with urine only, and have a
mesh guard to prevent solid objects from being flushed. They use less
water than flush toilets.
Bathroom and Kitchen Sinks
These sinks are also designed with a curved pipe that acts as a trap and
hold water. Again this serves to prevent gases and foul odors from
entering the home.
Vanity and Pedestal Sinks and Tubs and Showers
When these sinks are installed they should be sealed around the rims
with caulk. The plumbing operates in a similar way for both bathtubs and
showers. Tubs may require the use of additional bracing on the floor to
accommodate the excess weight of the water when they are full. Tubs
should be dry fitted prior to installation to make sure that all the
plumbing lines up.
Proper Condition of Plumbing Fixtures
The overall functioning of your plumbing system depends in large part on
your plumbing fixtures. When purchasing these fixtures buy the highest
quality possible with the longest warranty available. You can avoid
regular plumbing problems by having the fixtures installed by a
certified plumber.
